About The Chicken Shortage

Written By: richardwcraver - Aug• 31•21

If you like chicken wings, chicken sandwiches or even the lowly McNugget, which is made of chicken particles; you have undoubtedly become aware of a shortage of chicken.

Some restaurants have raised the price of chicken products accordingly; or elected to price gouge, form your own opinion.

I went to Bojangles the other morning and they were out of the Cajun Fillet Biscuits. I ordered a sausage, egg and cheese biscuit instead, but while sitting in my vehicle eating (The dining room is closed due to lack of staff, but that’s an entirely different subject.), I did a Google search; “why is there a chicken shortage”.

True to Google’s agenda algorithm the first few results were about ‘climate change’. Bullshit! It’s always best to look down further in search results, or on the next page. Bingo!

The company switched its male¬† roosters (What other kind is there?) earlier this year, but ultimately there have been fewer eggs and lower hatch rates. It estimates the problem accounts for about 50% of the shortage issue, according to the New York Post. “We’re changing out a [type of] male that, quite frankly, we made a bad decision on,” Tyson’s chief operating officer and group president of Poultry, Donnie King, said during an analyst call on Monday.

A spokesperson then followed up with CNN and noted that it chose the new type of rooster because of characteristics that could improve offspring chicken’s meat quality. Those roosters are now being replaced by the old ones, which is a time-consuming process. CNN says the company has not shared what will happen to the roosters that didn’t meet the demand. (Soup)

MALE Rooster

It seems Tyson changed out their roosters for a different breed that should have produced better yields; but it didn’t work out. Yes there was a once in a hundred year cold snap in Texas that killed some birds, and there is the problem of a government induced¬† labor shortage, but poor performing roosters is the main problem.

Tyson has acknowledged the blunder and is returning to the previous rooster breeding stock, but these things take time to cycle through from fertilization, to laying, hatching, growing, slaughter to shipment.

Apparently the new roosters were soyboys that had no interest in servicing the hens. Maybe they are drawing unemployment along with the additional Federal add-on and don’t feel the need to work as it were. Maybe they are watching Netflix on the new SmartTV they bought with their stimulus checks. Maybe the roosters self identify as hens. Just as likely some biological female hens identified as male roosters but couldn’t deliver. It’s a sad confused world we are living in right now.

Regardless, I’m ready for it to get worked out; garlic-romano wings at Waldo’s would be nice.
